This past week, I experienced one of the hardest days I’ve had as a father. My oldest daughter left to serve an 18-month mission for our church. I knew the day was coming, but I wasn’t prepared for how emotional it would be to say goodbye to the little girl who made me a dad.
As difficult as it was, I also knew the alternative would have been far worse. She has gifts to share, people to serve, and opportunities to become the person she’s capable of becoming. Staying where she was comfortable would have kept her from that growth.
That experience reminded me of something I’ve seen over and over again in business. The moments that stretch us are often the moments that prepare us for what’s next.
When I talk with agents and business owners who feel like they’ve plateaued, I encourage them to ask one simple question: What hard thing am I avoiding?
For some, it’s making the calls they don’t want to make. For others, it’s having a difficult conversation, investing in themselves, or taking the next step before they feel completely ready. Whatever it is, that’s usually where the opportunity is hiding.
The people who build remarkable businesses aren’t the ones who avoid discomfort. They’re the ones who become comfortable doing uncomfortable things. Every meaningful season of growth requires uncertainty, and every worthwhile goal asks something of us before it gives something back.
If you want more for your business, don’t wait for a lucky break. Take an honest look at the hard things you’ve been putting off. The next level of your business is often waiting on the other side of the decision you’ve been avoiding.
Growth has always required courage. That’s as true in life as it is in real estate.
