Decisions Are Emotional

By Justin Stoddart

There is no shortage of advice about how to grow a business. Open social media and you’ll find endless conversations about lead generation, cold outreach, marketing funnels, and the latest tactics to get in front of more people.

Those things have their place, but after years of working alongside top professionals across the country, I’ve noticed something different. The people who build businesses that last tend to focus less on finding the next client and more on understanding the one sitting in front of them.

In my conversation with Jonathan Thomas, a real estate agent in Colorado with a background in nursing and emergency medicine, I was reminded that one of the greatest professional skills has nothing to do with sales. It’s the ability to understand how people are feeling, and how they hope to feel when the process is over.

The Human Side of Every Transaction

Buying or selling a home is a financial decision, but it is rarely just a financial decision. Home is where families gather, memories are made, and life’s biggest moments unfold. That means every transaction carries an emotional component, whether clients express it or not.

Jonathan’s years in healthcare trained him to recognize emotions that often go unspoken. While most of us won’t come from a medical background, we can all become better listeners. We can slow down, ask better questions, and pay attention to what matters beyond the contract.

Clients don’t simply remember whether you solved their problem. They remember whether they felt understood while you were solving it.

Relationships Are More Scalable Than Prospecting

One part of Jonathan’s story stood out to me. Like many new agents, he was told to cold call, door knock, and chase leads. After his first year, he looked back and realized nearly all of his business had come from referrals.

That changed everything.

Instead of spending more time hunting for the next opportunity, he invested more deeply in the relationships he already had. He stayed connected after closing, celebrated milestones with clients, checked in on families, and became a trusted resource long after the transaction ended.

That’s the kind of business I believe in.

When clients trust your judgment, they don’t just return themselves. They introduce you to the people they care about. They also begin asking for recommendations beyond your own profession because you’ve earned the role of trusted advisor rather than simply service provider.

That is exactly why I’m passionate about helping professionals build strong referral communities. When you surround yourself with other people who genuinely care about serving clients well, everyone benefits, especially the client.

Relationships aren’t simply another marketing strategy. They are the foundation that allows every other part of your business to grow.

If you’re looking for your next competitive advantage, don’t start by asking how to reach more people. Start by asking how you can better understand, better serve, and better care for the people who already trust you. That’s the kind of business that earns referrals naturally, and it’s the kind of business worth building.
