America's Greatest Strength Isn't What You Think

By Justin Stoddart

As we celebrate America’s 250th birthday, I’ve found myself thinking less about fireworks and more about the people who made this country possible. We often remember the Declaration of Independence as a remarkable document, but it’s worth remembering that it wasn’t signed by people with nothing to lose. It was signed by men who pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor to an idea they believed was bigger than themselves.

That kind of commitment is difficult to comprehend today. Yet it’s also where I believe one of the greatest lessons for business begins.

The People Who Refused to Quit

One of the stories that has always stayed with me is the winter at Valley Forge. Washington’s army wasn’t simply fighting the British. They were fighting starvation, disease, freezing temperatures, and the very real possibility that their cause had already been lost.

Whether every detail of the famous story of Washington praying in the snow is historically verifiable isn’t the point. What history does tell us is that he didn’t quit, and neither did the people who followed him.

Every worthwhile endeavor reaches moments that invite us to walk away. Markets shift. Competition increases. Momentum slows. In those moments, it’s tempting to believe the obstacles are evidence that we’re on the wrong path. More often, they’re simply the price of building something meaningful.

The founders didn’t enjoy the country we enjoy today. They endured tremendous sacrifice so future generations could. That’s a perspective worth carrying into our own work.

Independence Should Be More Than a Holiday

The ideals that shaped America were built around freedom and self-governance. Those principles have influenced nations around the world for generations, and I think they’re just as relevant in business as they are in government.

That’s why I’ve become increasingly concerned by the direction many professional service industries have taken. Too many businesses have become dependent on lead platforms that control access to their clients. Every month, professionals pay more simply to remain visible, while the platforms become stronger and their margins become thinner.

That’s not ownership. It’s dependency.

When your pipeline disappears the moment you stop paying someone else, you’ve built very little that actually belongs to you.

Real freedom in business comes from creating relationships, earning trust, and developing a reputation that continues producing opportunities because people know your work and confidently recommend you to others.

Build Something That Outlasts You

The founders didn’t simply reject British rule. They built institutions that could sustain freedom long after they were gone. That mindset has shaped the way we think about ProInsight.

Instead of dozens of professionals independently chasing the same homeowners through expensive lead sources, we’ve created a model where trusted professionals work together. Mortgage professionals, REALTORS®, financial planners, estate attorneys, insurance agents, and others all serve the same families from different angles. By intentionally connecting those relationships, everyone becomes stronger, and homeowners receive trusted introductions instead of cold solicitations.

The result isn’t just better referrals. It’s a business that’s rooted in community instead of algorithms.

That’s the kind of asset worth building.

As you celebrate Independence Day, I hope you’ll spend a few minutes reflecting on the freedoms we often take for granted and the sacrifices that made them possible. Then, when the holiday is over and it’s time to get back to work, ask yourself a simple question:

Are you building something you truly own, or are you renting access to someone else’s platform?

The answer to that question will shape not only your business, but the legacy you leave behind.

If you’re ready to build a business founded on relationships, trust, and long-term independence, I’d love to have that conversation. That’s exactly what we’re building at ProInsight, and I’d welcome the opportunity to show you what’s possible.
